AASLH is also pleased to announce that, in addition to the Award of Merit, Baltimore ’68: Riots and Rebirth, was also selected as a 2009 WOW Award winner by the Leadership in History awards committee.
The WOW Award, given at the discretion of the Committee, is an additional award for an Award of Merit winner whose nomination is highly inspirational, exhibits exceptional scholarship, and/or is exceedingly entrepreneurial in terms of funding, partnerships, or collaborations, creative problem solving, or unusual project design and inclusiveness. Only four WOW Awards will be presented in 2009. AASLH congratulates the University of Baltimore for the work that has brought this honor.
Awards for 2009 represent fifty-nine organizations and individuals from across the United States. Award winners will be honored at a special banquet during the 2009 AASLH Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Saturday, August 29. A generous contribution from The History Channel will once again help underwrite the cost of the awards banquet.
The AASLH awards program was initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards not only honor significant achievement in the field of state and local history, but also brings public recognition of the opportunities for small and large organizations, institutions, and programs to make contributions in this arena.
