D. Hooper Emory

Table of Contents

Mr. Hopper Emory was born in Baltimore in 1881. Although he received a degree in law and was quite successfully engaged in banking and the automobile insurance business, in 1931 he sold his business and devoted his time to art. He studied under Paul Roche for a short period and then sailed for England hoping to Study under Frank Brangwyn, the famous English etcher. He was very disappointed to find that Brangwyn was not taking any pupils; but upon his recommendation Hopper studied at the Heatherly School of Art in England.

After nine months he returned home and devoted his time to etching and received the highest praise from some of the most exacting critics. A notice in the January 29,1936 Baltimore News Post reported that Emory's "Sumner Skies"- a cloud study - was chosen for the "100 Selected Prints" for the New York Exhibition of the Society of American Etchers.

He died in April, 1939.

The original etchings in this collection were selected and guaranteed by Don Swann, Director - Etchcrafters Art Guild, 879 park Avenue, Baltimore, MD. His name is signed to this etching to guarantee it is from his plate.
