A wide range of services and educational programs are available
to benefit non-profit organizations throughout the region, among them:

  • American Humanics (AH)
    an innovative, national competency-based certificate program that prepares students for entry-level professional opportunities in nonprofits, is offered at UB. AH’s Certificate in non-profit skills encompasses fundraising, board development, and program planning. Partner agencies include the American Red Cross, United Way, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, among others.

  • Baltimore Community Wealth Collaborative
    is a social entrepreneurship initiative designed to help local nonprofits establish successful for-profit ventures to provide new revenues. Launched in January 2004, the Collaborative is a partnership of area funders, Community Wealth Ventures, and UB where graduate students (MBA, MFA, MA) perform market analysis, business plan preparation, website design, customer surveys, and branding and identification strategies.

  • The Center for Community Technology Services (CCTS)
    helps nonprofits build their long-term . capacity to implement and sustain technology solutions, align IT with their missions and advance their operations and program outcomes. CCTS has provided technology audits and planning, project management, executive coaching, web development, database analysis and network installation to 50 area nonprofits, including Advocates for Children and Youth, Belair-Edison Neighborhoods, Inc., and the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance.

  • The Center for Negotiations and Conflict Management
    offers services such as skills training courses, alternative dispute resolution services including mediation and arbitration, and assessment and design of conflict management and dispute resolutions for nonprofit organizations and others.

  • The Center for Regional and Baltimore Studies (CRABS)
    documents the making of the modern city by actively collecting the records of civic, philanthropic, and voluntary organizations. Home to the archives of dozens of area nonprofit organizations including the YMCA of Central Maryland, Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance, the ACLU of Maryland, and the Maryland Committee for Children, CRABS provides a range of historical and archival services.

  • The Community Development Clinic of the UB School of Law
    provides a wide variety of transactional legal services to historically under-served communities in Baltimore City. Clients include community associations, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses in various Baltimore neighborhoods. Second and third-year law students, acting as student attorneys under the supervision of a law professor and supervising attorney, work in teams of two on legal matters such as contracts, the creation of business entities, and transfer of real estate.

  • Community Studies and Civic Engagement (CSCE)
    is UB’s new interdisciplinary undergraduate major that has as its foundation the study of historical and contemporary perspectives on nonprofit action, philanthropy, citizenship and democracy. Fostering the study, development and enhancement of community with a particular focus on central Maryland, the CSCE major partners students with nonprofit organizations. Courses include “Community Economic Development” and “Philanthropy and Voluntarism.”

  • The Jacob France Institute of the Merrick School of Business,
    since 1989 UB’s economic research center, has offered reliable, current information and research to nonprofit organizations and others in the following areas: labor market dynamics; economic and workforce development; human services; and community markets and statistical systems.

  • The Rosenberg Center for Student Involvement
    coordinates numerous community service initiatives, including youth leadership development with the Mt. Royal Elementary and Middle School. The CSI also coordinates UB’s teams for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk for a Cure, raising over $6,000 in the last two years. The CSI organizes Community Service Day, through which hundreds of students, faculty and staff members serve area nonprofits like the Maryland Food Bank, the USS Constellation, Civic Works and Ronald McDonald House.

  • The Schaefer Center for Public Policy
    offers strategic planning, performance measurement, program evaluation, opinion research, and professional development training services to nonprofit organizations as well as state government agencies. Nonprofit clients have included Baltimore City Healthy Start, Inc., Vera Institute of Justice, and the Mt. Vernon Belvedere Improvement Association.
