In 1998, Conrad Schafran, a 1949 graduate of the University of Baltimore, donated his vast collection of: jazz, blues, folk, rock, big band, and show-tune vinyl recordings to the University of Baltimore. Since the initial donation of approximately 4,000 albums he has continued to add to the holdings that now number over 6,000.
At the time of the donation he stated, "At the age of 75, I wanted to contribute on a small scale in keeping jazz alive to a new generation." He first began collecting jazz records shortly before World War II. A native of New York City, Mr. Schafran described how he began his jazz collection, "in 1941, my buddy and I would go to a discount store located in Greenwich Village. A record cost 29 cents each or 4 for $1.00."
Recently Mr. Schafran recalled that his collection grew slowly from this modest beginning, "Through the years, I continued to buy jazz LP's, but it wasn't until 1975 that I became a true collector. In twenty-five years my collection increased from approximately 600 LP's to over a current total of 5,000." It now includes virtually every American jazz artist from the first half of the 20th Century, both vocal and instrumental.
