Title of Collection: Records of the American Clan Gregor Society (ACGS)
Inclusive Dates: 1891-2009
Bulk Dates: 1950-1980
Scope and Contents:
This collection includes both organizational records and genealogy research. The organizational records are primarily correspondence between council members from the mid-1950's to the early 1980's. The genealogy research on the MacGregor and Magruder family lines represents the work of several members of the society, including Thomas Garland Magruder, Charles Kurz, and Regina Hill. This archival collection compliments the society's Marshall Magruder Memorial Library, also housed at the University of Baltimore, Langsdale Library.
Historical Note:
The American Clan Gregor Society was organized in 1909 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Although related to the Clan Gregor Society of Scotland, the American group formed as a separate society in order to admit women and members whose surnames were derivatives—known as Septs—of the name MacGregor. The society's objectives, as stated in 1910, were “to gather in clanship, to inspirit cordiality among its members, to foster home ties, and to collect genealogical and historical records for the compilation of a complete and authentic history of it and its members.” In addition to genealogical research, other society activities include the publication of annual Year Books, Annual Gatherings, and sponsorship of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina. More information about ACGS can be found on the society's website: http://american-clan-gregor-society.us/.
Custodial History:
The Marshall Magruder Memorial Library was given to the University of Baltimore Foundation in 1994 for deposit in the Langsdale Library. Archival material from the estate of Dr. Charles Kurz was accessioned between 1994 and 1999. Three additional accruals occurred in November and December of 2008. The collection was partially processed in 1999 and is currently being re-processed.
Please note that ACGS membership applications are kept by the Clan Registrar, Lois Ann Garlitz, American Fork, Utah.
